An avid quilter with a severe fabric addiction, Donna Clauer has
been sewing since she was 12. Graduating from Indiana University
of PA, she pursued a career in education, teaching in the Maryland
public school system and later, while raising her family, in
private nursery schools. Art and crafts have always been important
in her life.
Donna inherited her love for quilts from her mother's
Pennsylvania Dutch ancestors, whose traditional quilts filled their
need to be creative in times of financial hardship. Inspired by
their work, Donna has been quilting for 30 years. In 1997 she began
to explore 'surface design' techniques in fiber and to incorporate
them into her quilts, resulting in "Art Quilts'... quilted wallhangings
that from a distance look like traditional art. Starting with a
'canvas' of 100% cotton, Donna uses brushes, sponges and acrylics
to paint her center image. Borders are added, and the assembled
'top' is layered as a quilt. Raw edge piecing gives texture to
the piece, and threadsketching enhances detail while adding color.Stitching
through the layers creates highlight on the loft as well as subtle
shadows in the valleys.
Donna is available for lectures, group workshops,
and private lessons. Commissioned work is welcome. Her work can
be found year round in Ocean City, New Jersey at the Fine Art League
on Asbury Avenue.
